Reviewing your own hands

The fastest way to get better is not yet another video. It is your own hands from yesterday.

Videos and articles teach you what goes wrong in general. Your own hands show what goes wrong for you, and that is the only mistake you can repair. Anyone who reviews for half an hour a week improves faster than anyone who plays an extra hour every evening: volume repeats your mistakes, reviewing finds them.

The method in three steps

1. Collect. Export your hand histories. If you play on GGPoker, follow the PokerCraft guide, and remember the limit: only the last 90 days can be downloaded, so make a habit of it.

2. Select. Pick the big pots and the moments of doubt, won and lost. The hand you won with a mistake in it teaches you more than the hand you lost cleanly.

3. Judge street by street. Forget the outcome and ask the same questions at every decision: what did his action say about his set of hands? Was my price calculation right? Did the size of my bet have a reason?

From single hands to patterns

Learn gives you the background. Train asks you to make choices, and My game is where you investigate your own hands. Whatever question you started with, you can go back to it.

frequently asked questions

Review questions.

Why should I review hands when I know what happened anyway?+

Because at the table you saw the outcome, not the decision. In peace, without the emotion of the moment, you suddenly see the missed raise, the call that was too expensive and the pattern that comes back every week. The difference between players who grow and players who stall sits almost entirely here.

Which hands do I review?+

Not all of them: the big pots (won and lost), the hands where you hesitated, and anything still nagging at you. Ten hands looked at deliberately are worth more than a hundred clicked through.

What do I look for when reviewing?+

At decisions, not at outcomes. Ask the same questions on every street: what did his action say about his set of hands, what was my plan, and was my size right? A lost hand can be flawless and a won hand can be full of mistakes.

How do I get hold of my hand histories?+

Every serious site lets you export them. For GGPoker that goes through PokerCraft, and watch out: only the last 90 days can be downloaded, so export regularly. The step by step guide is on this site.
